Hartwell, GA — The Hartwell City Council has approved the purchase of a 2.8-acre property formerly owned by Lewis Lumber for $1.5 million to establish a new Gas Department facility, despite concerns from some council members about the cost.
The decision came during the City Council meeting on September 8, 2025. Councilman Sheller expressed reservations, citing an independent appraisal that valued the property at $1.35 million, slightly below the purchase price. The motion to reconsider the acquisition was narrowly defeated in a 3–2 vote, allowing the transaction to proceed.
City officials emphasized that the new facility is necessary to modernize operations and improve the efficiency and security of the Gas Department. “This property will provide the infrastructure we need to better serve the community and ensure safe, reliable gas services,” said a council spokesperson.
The due diligence period concluded without issues, confirming the property’s suitability for municipal operations. Supporters argued that the investment will pay off in improved service delivery, while opponents cautioned that careful fiscal oversight is essential.
The new Gas Department facility is expected to be a cornerstone in Hartwell’s ongoing efforts to upgrade municipal infrastructure, supporting the city’s growth and long-term development plans.
